Finding Hidden Storage Space Around the House
Who doesn’t need a little extra storage space? Very few people are just awash with space. So, what are you supposed to do with all your stuff when you don’t have much closet space to store things in and the dreaded state of clutter has started to rear its ugly head around your house? Find or create hidden storage areas around the house. You may not see it now, but it’s there and ready to be used. Here are a few suggestions for how to handle storage issues in your home and get, and keep, things under control.
1. Walls and Ceilings
Don’t underestimate all of that free space up there just because gravity suggests that items belong on the ground. Kitchens especially are perfect places to suspend things. Hanging racks for pots and pans and produce baskets can be secured to the ceiling and dish, spice and knife racks can be mounted on the walls. If you do this, you will have the room to use your pantry for what it’s meant for—food!
2. Seasonal Clothing
Linen closets often get turned into seasonal clothing storage. If your space is limited in that department, you might consider boxing up your out of season clothes and storing them in a small storage unit, or in the nook under the stairs or even vacuum sealing them and stacking them under the bed.
Where else are shoes supposed to go other than the closet? There are those racks that you can hang on the back of a door that hold 10-12 pairs of shoes as well as storage devices for under the bed; however, if you find that you can’t spare any of this precious storage space, a book shelf near your closet can also display those gorgeous pumps, beneath which you can hang your purses on hooks.
Storage woes are common and can make us feel cramped and uncomfortable, but the good news is that if you get a little creative and think about using space in 3 dimensional terms, you should be able to have access to what you need and when without compromising your need for room to breathe.
